What Makes Servers Different
Technically, any computer can function as a server. By definition, a server is a computer (or computers) that delivers files to another computer (the client computer) based on a specific request. You could set up any computer to work with this kind of client-server functionality, but most Web servers or company servers are set up a little differently.
Most servers are mounted in racks and kept in an isolated location to increase security. The operating systems on these computers are usually different than consumer versions and are specifically optimized to work with the client-server dynamic. Most operating systems don’t even have a graphical user interface because that would take up resources that could be better used in other places. These are not computers you will sit down at to do some word processing. They have other, highly specific tasks that they are designed for.
