Helping Soccer Coaches Lead Properly

Jane Weightman, author of the book, Managing People, instructs the soccer coach to be in charge of making the decisions and informing the group of the decisions made with the hope that the group members will comply.  This manner of leading is referred to as Telling and will help the soccer team.  Another form of leading is called Selling.  Here the group leader makes the decisions and then tries to convince the group of the positive benefits of the decision.  A third leadership method is called Consulting.  Here the group leader presents the goal and asks for the group members to provide their input on how to reach that goal.  The final method of leading is called Joining.  Here the leader sets the rules of decision making and lets the group come to their own decision.

When using a great leadership style and some good soccer ball drills you are well on your way to having a great team.
