Tempered glass is pretty tougher than your regular glass, thanks to science and technology of course. It has been put through a number of progressions so that it can handle more stress and strain. This is not to say it will not break, as it will.
Tempered glass, like the ones used in Black Glass Dining Tables, is not only better because it can handle a little more roughness, but it can also handle temperature variations. If you were to put a hot plate on a regular piece of glass, the temperature may cause the glass to break. But tempered glass can handle the heat, or the cold, of the situation.
